Who is Power to Move?
Hello, my name is Cass and I am a Mum of 2 teenage children. About 3 years ago I started noticing kids my children went to school with or through other areas of life, did not exercise or play sport, and some had been diagnosed with health-related issues such as Obesity, Diabetes, Anxiety and Depression. As a Mum, this made me really sad. To me eating healthy, nutritious food and exercising seemed pretty simple, and part of our daily routine. But the reality was, that as I started to research more, learn about families, cultural backgrounds and different upbringings, that it was muchΒ harder for many families.Β Β
I was brought up in a middle-class family with working parents, I went to a good school, played a musical instrument, and competed in State and National Swimming Champs from the age of 11 β 16 years. My daily routine as a teenager looked like this:Β Β
- 4:15 am WakeΒ Β
- 5 β 7 am Swimming trainingΒ Β
- 8:30 β 3:30 SchoolΒ Β
- 5- 6:30 pm Swimming Training (plus 3 times a week 1 hour of Gym afterwards)
- 7 pm DinnerΒ Β
- 9 pm BedΒ Β
Due to all my exercise, I ate like a horse and was tired a LOT. Now I am not saying that anyone should attempt any type of routine like this unless they are dedicated in a chosen sport, but it did lay the foundations in me from a very early age that movement and good food and rest go hand in hand to living a healthy life. In fact, besides the waking at 4:15 am, my day still tends to look at lot like this.Β Β
BUT this has not always been the case. From 2012 β 2017 I was consumed by jobs that cost me my physical and mental health.
I was overweight, unhealthy, and whilst still going to the gym occasionally, not moving enough.Β SoΒ what did I do? In 2015 I started focusing on movement, I incorporated little things like taking stairs instead of the elevator, riding a bike to work when possible, walking on lunch breaks, and scheduling my exercise like a very important meeting that I would NOT miss. Little things changed, I felt better, clothes started fitting better. I then focused on my healthy eating, not a diet, but more colour in every meal, eating when I was hungry, not because the clock said it was time to eat. I also made a goal. A goal that seemed at the time quite impossible, I wanted to start running again and complete a half marathon. I didnβt choose a run, or a date at first, it was more that I had set an intention and when I went to the gym or did not want to go for that walk, I reminded myself about my goal, and it got me motivated (most of the time) to keep committed and on track.
The reason why I have told you this is to let you know that I am just a regular person, who has struggled to keep the balance of life in check, but I am here to help you, and your family.Β Β
